(ZChloroethyl) trimethylammonium Chloride and Related Compounds as Plant Growth Substances

چکیده
In this series of publications, the action of (2chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride’ and certain other structurally related compounds will be described as a class of plant growth substances. The growth of plants after treatment with certain of these chemical compounds will be published in subsequent articles?, 3 The most characteristic effect is the development of stockier plants with shorter and thicker stems. Such a growth pattern is the opposite from that produced by gibberellin, and in fact the actions of gibberellin and of (%-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride on the growth of plants are mutually antagonistic.2* 3 In this paper, data from an assay with wheat seedlings are presented in order to determine relationships between chemical structure and biological activity as plant growth substances. In 1908, it was noted that plants growing in solutions containing 25 p.p.m. of (ethylene)trimethylammonium bromide were injured, and that plants were killed by 250 p.p.m. of this compound (1). Other prior tests of compounds related to (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride on the growth of plants have not been reported. However, (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride is a competitive inhibitor of cholinesterase in animals (2).

Several compounds closely related to choline and of the structure CHoX-CHo-N+ (CH3)3 * Clare active as plant growth substances when X is a Cl, Br, or = CH2 group (14). Treated plants develop thicker stems, shorter internodes, and intensely dark green leaves (7, 16, 17). The growth changes simulate those caused by exposure of plants to high light intensities, a short photoperiod, and low tempera...

Beginning about 1950, a number of compounds have been describedd which have the property of reducing growth in higher plants. The most widely known and studied of these dwarfing agents or growth retardants are 2-isopropyl-4-(dimet'hylamino-5-methylphenyl-1 -p~iperidlinecarboxylate methyl chloride or AMO-1618, (2-chloroethyl) trimethylamnionium chloride or CCC (Cycocel), tribultyl-2,4-dichloroob...

In order to investigate the interaction effect of salinity and nitrogen on growth, mineral composition and salinity tolerance of soure orange seedlings a factorial experiment was carried out in completely randomized design with three replications. Factors consisted of four sodium chloride rates (0, 250, 500 and 1000 mg sodium chloride kg-1 soil) and four nitrogen levels (0, 50, 100, and 200 mg ...

Plants of Pharbitis nil were treated with the growth retardant (2-chloroethyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CCC) shortly before and after anthesis. Fresh and dry weight of immature seeds were not affected by the CCC treatment. The level of gibberellin-like activity in Pharbitis seeds as compared to control seeds was strongly reduced by CCC application. The progenies of the treated plants also had...

The ability of a series of choline analogs to produce a form of dwarfism in wheat was recently described by Tolbert (7). One of the more potent compounds tested was allyl trimethylammonium bromide (AMAB). The most characteristic effect upon the growth of Thatcher wheat after treatment of the roots with AMAB was the development of stockier plants with short thick stems. This pronounced dwarfism ...
